It is important to remember that individual experiences and responses to trauma can vary, and if you're struggling with the impact of the traumatic event, it's essential to seek support from a qualified mental health professional.

  1. Emotional processing: Traumatic events can be overwhelming, leading to intense emotions that may be difficult to process fully. Sometimes, individuals might suppress or avoid these emotions, which can result in unresolved feelings resurfacing over time.

  2. Triggers and reminders: Certain triggers or reminders can bring back memories of the traumatic event, even after many years. These triggers may be anything associated with the event, such as sounds, smells, locations, or specific dates.

  3. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): Some people develop PTSD after experiencing trauma, which can cause persistent and distressing symptoms such as flashbacks, nightmares, and hypervigilance. PTSD can significantly impact one's life and make it challenging to move on from the traumatic event.

  4. Impact on belief systems: Trauma can shatter one's sense of safety, trust, and understanding of the world. This can lead to ongoing struggles with anxiety, depression, or difficulties in relationships and coping.

  5. Lack of support: Not having adequate support or seeking professional help after the traumatic event can make it harder to process and heal from the experience.

  6. Coping strategies: Sometimes, people may develop unhealthy coping mechanisms, such as substance abuse or avoidance, to deal with the distressing feelings associated with trauma. These coping strategies may offer short-term relief but hinder long-term healing.

If you find that the traumatic event still significantly impacts your daily life and well-being, it's crucial to consider seeking help from a mental health professional. Therapy, such as trauma-focused therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), or eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), can be effective in processing and resolving trauma-related difficulties. Remember that healing is a journey, and with appropriate support, it is possible to find ways to cope and move forward in life.

Online EMDR Therapy is available - Tuesdays - Wednesdays and Thursdays.
